Lagos Central senatorial candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Ladipo Johnson, has said a Peter Obi-Rabiu Kwankwaso ticket would unlock Nigeria’s potential if elected in the 2027 general elections.
Johnson made the statement on Wednesday at a press conference in Abuja to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
He said Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999 had not yet produced effective governance, arguing that the 2027 elections presented an opportunity for what he described as a political reset.
Johnson said the country’s democratic progress had remained largely procedural rather than substantive and called for leaders who would prioritise accountability, competence and discipline.
“Nigeria’s true democratic potential will be unlocked when visionary leaders like Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso steer the national ship, bringing accountability, competence and structured discipline to the centre,” he said.
The former spokesman of the New Nigeria People’s Party identified insecurity, corruption, fiscal irresponsibility and weak accountability as major challenges facing the country.
He argued that addressing them would require what he described as decisive, merit-driven executive leadership and stronger legislative oversight.
On corruption, Johnson said the diversion of public funds had undermined the delivery of infrastructure, healthcare and education.
He pledged that, if elected to the Senate, he would push for stricter legislative oversight and independent audits of federal allocations.
Johnson also promised to ensure that Lagos Central received its share of developmental funds while demanding greater accountability in the management of public resources.
