Iran Signals Optimism Ahead of New Nuclear Talks With United States in Geneva

Dubai / Geneva — Iran has expressed cautious optimism about the prospects of its latest round of nuclear negotiations with the United States, as a high-level Iranian delegation departed for Switzerland ahead of talks aimed at easing years of tension over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Wednesday that Tehran sees a “good outlook” for the upcoming discussions, which mark the third round of direct engagement between the two longtime adversaries since talks resumed earlier this month.

A fragile diplomatic window

The renewed diplomatic push comes amid heightened military tensions in the Middle East, with the United States reinforcing its regional presence while warning Tehran against further escalation. Washington has repeatedly stated that “all options remain on the table” should diplomacy fail.

Despite the confrontational backdrop, Pezeshkian struck a hopeful tone, saying Iranian negotiators were acting under the guidance of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to prevent the crisis from sliding into open conflict.

“We have tried to manage this process so that we can move beyond the destructive ‘no war, no peace’ situation,” Pezeshkian said, according to Iranian state media, referring to the prolonged stalemate that has defined U.S.–Iran relations for years.

Iran says deal is possible — with conditions

Foreign Minister Araqchi reinforced that message earlier this week, saying a negotiated settlement remains achievable if diplomacy is allowed to take precedence over threats and military posturing.

Iranian officials insist their nuclear programme is strictly peaceful and intended for civilian energy and medical research. However, Tehran has enriched uranium to levels far beyond what is required for power generation, bringing it close to weapons-grade thresholds — a move that has alarmed Western governments.

U.S. and Israeli concerns persist

The United States and Israel maintain that Iran is seeking the capability to build a nuclear weapon, a claim Tehran firmly denies. Israeli leaders have repeatedly warned that a nuclear-armed Iran would pose an existential threat to Israel and have urged the U.S. to maintain maximum pressure.

Israel, which is not a party to the Geneva talks, is believed to be closely monitoring the negotiations and coordinating with Washington behind the scenes.

Meanwhile, Iran has issued its own warnings, stating that any military strike against its territory would be met with retaliation against U.S. bases across the Middle East — a threat that underscores the high stakes of the talks.

What’s at stake in Geneva

The Geneva negotiations are expected to focus on:

  • Limits on Iran’s uranium enrichment levels
  • Enhanced international inspections and monitoring
  • Possible sanctions relief for Iran
  • Guarantees against future unilateral withdrawal from any agreement

Previous nuclear agreements, most notably the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), collapsed after the United States withdrew during Trump’s first term, reigniting hostilities and pushing Iran to expand its nuclear activities

Analysts say the current talks represent one of the last viable diplomatic openings before the crisis risks turning into direct military confrontation.

While both sides appear eager to avoid war, deep mistrust remains, and any agreement would require difficult political compromises in Tehran, Washington, and allied capitals.

For now, expectations remain cautious — but Iran’s public expression of optimism suggests that, at least for this round, diplomacy is still alive.
