Gary Neville has criticised Manchester United’s display in their 1-1 draw with Fulham, questioning the team’s effort during a poor spell after half-time.
Neville, who spent his entire professional career at United, described the opening 15 minutes of the second half as the worst he had seen from the club.
“I’ve watched Manchester United since the age of five and that’s the worst 15 minutes I’ve ever seen,” Neville said, as reported by BBC Sport.
“Absolutely pathetic. I’ve never seen such a lack of effort. What must [Michael] Carrick be thinking?”
United had struggled to create momentum before Lisandro Martinez put the ball into his own net, giving Fulham the lead just after the hour mark.
Matheus Cunha rescued a point for United in the 89th minute when his effort took a deflection before finding the net.
Cunha also acknowledged Fulham’s greater intensity at the start of the second half, saying United needed to respond to that level of energy.
“At the beginning of the second half they put in more energy than us,” he told Sky Sports. “We cannot accept this.”
United manager Michael Carrick, however, rejected the suggestion that his players were affected by a fitness problem, pointing to their strong finish and late equaliser.
The draw extended United’s difficult start to the Premier League campaign, with the team continuing to search for consistency under Carrick.
