Argentine President Javier Milei has criticised the United Nations as a “useless organisation”, accusing it of failing to uphold collective security and human rights.
Milei made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing the UN, where he also renewed Argentina’s claim to the Falkland Islands, known as the Malvinas in Argentina and administered by Britain.
The Argentine leader accused the UN of allowing “chaos, violence and international terrorism” to persist and said the organisation had failed to enforce its own principles.
He described the UN as an organisation that was “serving only to feed a caste of fatally arrogant parasites disguised as well-intentioned bureaucrats.”
Milei also accused the organisation of ignoring Argentina’s position on the Falklands dispute.
Argentina has maintained its claim to the islands, which have been under British administration. The two countries fought a war over the territory in 1982.
Milei argued that countries that comply with international rules receive little benefit while those that violate them face insufficient consequences.
His remarks came as Argentina and the United States announced a joint initiative focused on infrastructure and economic connectivity.
The initiative, known as the Andes-Atlantic Corridor, is intended to support investment in transport, digital infrastructure, minerals and energy and connect those sectors with major Atlantic ports and Western markets, according to a joint statement.
The announcement underscored Milei’s close relationship with US President Donald Trump.
The Falklands dispute has also resurfaced over oil exploration near the islands. Britain recently reaffirmed its support for businesses and individuals supplying goods and services to the Falkland Islands, including those operating in the hydrocarbons sector, after an Argentine federal judge ordered British and Israeli companies to halt development of an oil project.
