Four men have died and another was injured after a Toyota Camry crashed on the Awka–Enugu Expressway in Anambra State in the early hours of Monday.
The vehicle, carrying five male occupants, left the road, plunged into a drainage, struck a culvert and somersaulted near the Old Government House in Awka.
The Federal Road Safety Corps said the crash occurred at about 4:31am on November 2, 2026. Preliminary findings indicated that the car was allegedly travelling at excessive speed before the driver lost control.
The FRSC Sector Public Education Officer in Anambra, Margaret Onabe, said the injured occupant was taken to hospital for treatment.
Three of the victims were confirmed dead at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka, while the fourth was later confirmed dead at Apex Hospital in the same town.
The corps said the vehicle, a white Toyota Camry with registration number ASB 264 AV, was recovered and towed to its command. Rescuers also recovered personal belongings, including N185,300 in cash and a key holder.
Anambra FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, urged motorists to observe speed limits and ensure their vehicles were properly controlled, particularly during early-morning journeys when visibility could be reduced.
She also advised drivers to ensure that approved speed-limiting devices and other safety equipment were functional, warning that excessive speed reduces reaction time and can worsen the consequences of crashes.
The incident comes after a separate road crash near Zangoro Village on the Bauchi–Maiduguri Federal Highway in August, in which nine people were burnt beyond recognition and eight others injured.
