The Nigeria Police Force has reported that its tactical team prevented an attack on the convoy of Mustapha Gubio, the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate in Borno State, and other political figures travelling along the Kareto-Damasak road.
The incident occurred on Thursday when the convoy came under attack by terrorists who reportedly used improvised explosive devices, IEDs, and rocket-propelled grenades, RPGs.
According to the police, tactical operatives responded to the attack and succeeded in forcing the attackers to withdraw into the surrounding bush.
The security team subsequently carried out a sweep of the affected area to determine whether additional explosive devices had been planted along the route and to prevent a secondary attack.
Tactical Team Forces Terrorists to Retreat
The police said the attack involved the use of both IEDs and RPGs against the convoy as it travelled along the Kareto-Damasak axis.
Tactical officers engaged the attackers and forced them to retreat from the immediate area into the surrounding bush.
“The tactical team forced the terrorists to retreat into the surrounding bush and subsequently scanned and cleared the immediate axis to neutralise secondary explosive threats,” the police said.
Following the withdrawal of the attackers, security personnel searched the area and cleared the route before allowing the convoy to proceed.
The operation was aimed not only at dealing with the immediate attack but also at ensuring that additional explosives had not been left behind for the convoy or responding security personnel.
Convoy Evacuated Without Casualties
The police said the convoy was subsequently moved to a secure location after the area had been searched and cleared.
Those travelling in the convoy included the APC governorship candidate, government officials and other political stakeholders.
Despite the reported use of explosives and rocket-propelled grenades during the attack, the police said no member of the entourage was killed or injured.
“The convoy, conveying a gubernatorial aspirant, government officials and political stakeholders, was safely evacuated to a secure location with no casualties recorded among members of the entourage,” the police said.
The successful evacuation followed the tactical team’s intervention and the subsequent security sweep of the route.
Security Operation Continues
The incident highlights the security risks faced along the Kareto-Damasak road, where the convoy came under attack while transporting political figures and government officials.
After forcing the terrorists into the bush, security personnel remained focused on clearing the area of possible secondary explosive threats before moving the convoy.
The police said the immediate axis was scanned and cleared as part of the response, ensuring that the route was considered safe before the convoy was evacuated.
The attack involved multiple forms of weaponry, with the police specifically identifying improvised explosive devices and rocket-propelled grenades as having been used by the attackers.
No casualties were recorded among the members of the entourage, according to the police account.
