US, China agree to create communication channel for AI incidents

The United States and China have agreed to establish a communication channel for dealing with artificial intelligence-related incidents following talks between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The White House announced the agreement on Friday after the two leaders concluded a summit that included discussions on the growing challenges surrounding AI.

According to a White House fact sheet, the two countries will also launch a “U.S.-China Super Intelligence (SI) Dialogue” to discuss the risks and benefits associated with the technology.

The White House said the leaders agreed to use the term “Super Intelligence” rather than AI, with the next exchange expected to take place by November.

The two governments also agreed to establish a “bilateral communication channel” for incidents involving the technology.

Trump had said before the summit that Super Intelligence would be a major subject of discussion, while indicating that he did not want to disclose details ahead of the meeting.

“That is China’s position also,” Trump said on social media.

Xi called for the two countries to manage their rivalry while ensuring that AI development remains under human control.

“We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control,” Xi said at the White House on Thursday.
