Former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has urged Portugal to recognise Cristiano Ronaldo’s contribution to football amid the controversy surrounding the veteran forward’s departure from the national team camp.
Zidane made the comments during a press conference ahead of France’s Nations League match against Belgium.
Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp following remarks by head coach Jorge Jesus during a press conference before the team’s Nations League victory over Denmark.
Zidane worked with Ronaldo at Real Madrid, winning one LaLiga title and three consecutive Champions League trophies with the forward in his squad.
“Cristiano Ronaldo made me win incredible trophies. Hats off to you, Cris. We must salute his great career the right way. I was lucky to have him with me. I have a lot of respect for all my players and especially for Cristiano,” Zidane said, according to Madrid Zone on X.
Ronaldo’s departure means he will miss Portugal’s final Nations League match against Norway.
