The Senate has passed two bills seeking to establish a new framework for workers’ compensation and amend the law governing federal polytechnics.
The legislation comprises the Nigerian Employees’ Compensation Trust Fund Agency Establishment Bill, 2026, and the Federal Polytechnics Act Amendment Bill, 2026. Both were passed on Thursday after lawmakers reconsidered their provisions and approved them clause by clause.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved the motion to recommit the bills to the Committee of the Whole, saying further review was needed to improve administrative clarity and strengthen their legal provisions.
Kamorudeen Oyewumi, senator representing Osun West, seconded the motion, arguing that the review would remove ambiguities and bring the proposed laws into line with legislation establishing similar institutions.
Bamidele said the workers’ compensation bill would repeal the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) Act and the Employees’ Compensation Act, replacing them with a new legal framework.
The proposed framework provides for compensation in cases of death, injury, disease or disability arising out of, or occurring in the course of, employment.
The Federal Polytechnics Act Amendment Bill seeks to revise the existing law governing federal polytechnics, including provisions relating to their functions.
Following the clause-by-clause consideration, the Senate passed both bills after third readings.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the lawmakers involved in the process, saying the legislation addressed workers’ welfare and the role of technical institutions in Nigeria’s economic development.
