Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen ahead of Thursday’s Nations League clash with Denmark, after coach Jorge Jesus denied reports of a rift between the pair.
Reuters reports that Ronaldo was absent from Portugal’s final session on Wednesday, despite Jesus earlier saying the 41-year-old would be involved.
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed Ronaldo’s absence but did not provide a reason. Portuguese media reported that the captain left the venue in a federation vehicle as his teammates began their preparations.
The development follows Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway on Sunday, when Ronaldo remained on the bench despite warming up. He later went straight to the dressing room instead of joining his teammates in greeting supporters.
Jesus dismissed suggestions of a disagreement, saying there had been no incident between them. He also said Ronaldo had not refused to train and had instead completed individual exercises focused on mobility and strengthening.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola reported that Ronaldo left Parken Stadium shortly after Jesus’ press conference. Marca also reported that his private jet was expected to travel from Madrid to Copenhagen to collect him.
Portugal Football Federation president Pedro Proença travelled to Copenhagen earlier than planned and reportedly met with Ronaldo and Jesus.
Jesus had indicated that Gonçalo Ramos was expected to start against Denmark, with Ronaldo available if required.
Ronaldo’s departure has now cast doubt over his involvement in Thursday’s match. There has been no official announcement that he has withdrawn from the squad or ended his international career.
Reuters reported that Ronaldo’s representatives were not immediately available for comment.
