Robbers Kill Father of Five in Ondo as Family Demands Justice

Residents of the Shagari area in Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State were thrown into mourning following the killing of a renowned refrigeration and air-conditioning technician, Idris Abiodun Clement, during a robbery attack on his residence in the early hours of Sunday.

The 47-year-old father of five reportedly sustained fatal injuries after confronting armed robbers who invaded his family compound around 1 a.m. The attackers had allegedly robbed residents in neighbouring houses before targeting Clement’s residence.

According to eyewitness accounts, the robbers, believed to be three in number, had already attacked two other houses in the area before forcefully gaining entry into the Clement family compound.

One of the deceased’s sons, AbdulFatai Clement, described the incident as tragic and devastating for the family.

“The armed robbers came into our street around 1 a.m. and started robbing residents. They had robbed about two other houses before they came into our house in full force,” he said.

“My father tried to defend the family and confronted one of the robbers, not knowing there were several of them and that they were heavily armed. They attacked him with axes and cutlasses before one of them brought out a gun and shot him.

“The robbers fled immediately after he collapsed. We rushed him to the hospital, but he had lost a lot of blood. Doctors later confirmed him dead.”

A close friend of the deceased, Hakeem, described the killing as painful and senseless, noting that Clement was widely respected in the community for his generosity and willingness to assist others in their businesses and personal endeavours.

The deceased’s widow, Taibat Clement, appealed to the Ondo State Government and security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the murder are brought to justice.

Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Command said one suspect had been arrested in connection with the robbery and killing.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, disclosed that the suspect was apprehended by security operatives and is currently assisting investigators.

“We have arrested a suspect in connection with the violent attack on residents of Shagari and the killing of the technician,” Abayomi said.

He added that the suspect is being held at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCID) while efforts continue to track down other members of the gang and conclude the investigation.

The incident has renewed concerns over security in residential communities, with residents calling for increased police patrols and stronger measures to curb criminal activities in the area.
