The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has condemned the arrest of Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji by alleged security operatives in Enugu, describing the circumstances surrounding the incident as disturbing and calling for respect for due process and the rule of law.
Professor Aghaji, a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, respected academic, and one of Nigeria’s most distinguished medical professionals, was reportedly taken from his residence in the early hours of Friday, July 3.
Reports suggest that the arrest may be linked to his role as the personal physician of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra. Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, had earlier raised concerns on social media, alleging that the arrest could be connected to a medical report issued by Professor Aghaji concerning his client.
Following reports of the arrest, the Enugu State chapter of the NMA convened a meeting of its State Officers Council (SOC) to assess the situation and determine appropriate action.
In a communiqué jointly signed by the State Chairman, Dr Sunday Okafor, and the Secretary, Dr Chima Edeoga, the association expressed concern over the manner in which the professor was arrested. While acknowledging the constitutional responsibilities of security agencies, the doctors stressed that every citizen deserves to be treated with dignity and afforded all legal protections guaranteed under the law.
The association disclosed that it immediately commenced consultations with relevant government and security authorities to obtain clarification on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the communiqué, these engagements involved the Office of the Security Adviser to the Governor of Enugu State, the Nigeria Police Force through the Divisional Police Officer of Independence Layout Division and the Commissioner of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other relevant stakeholders.
The NMA noted that no official explanation had been provided regarding the reasons for Professor Aghaji’s arrest.
Consequently, the association resolved to convene an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) of its members to fully deliberate on the matter and determine lawful and professional steps to be taken.
The association also pledged to continue engaging relevant authorities with the aim of securing the professor’s release or ensuring that his constitutional rights are fully protected, including access to his family, legal representation, and appropriate medical care where necessary.
In addition, the Enugu chapter said it would formally notify the National Officers’ Committee of the Nigerian Medical Association and seek coordinated advocacy efforts to safeguard justice and protect members of the medical profession.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue and lawful engagement while closely monitoring developments.
“We assure all members that every legitimate effort is being deployed to protect the rights and welfare of our distinguished colleague,” the communiqué stated.
The NMA further urged its members to remain calm, united, and vigilant while awaiting further directives from the association.
