Residents of Plateau State have criticised Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s response to a fresh wave of killings, urging his administration to move beyond condemnation and condolence messages and take stronger measures to protect communities.
The criticism followed attacks recorded between Friday, September 11, and Sunday, September 13, in Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Riyom and Jos South local government areas, where about 21 people were reportedly killed by suspected Fulani extremists and local militia groups.
Mutfwang, in a statement on Monday, condemned the violence and said his administration remained committed to strengthening the state’s security architecture.
The governor said the government was working with security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders through dialogue, intelligence sharing and community engagement.
He also assured residents that security operatives were pursuing those responsible for the attacks and would bring them to justice.
But callers to a radio programme on Monday evening questioned the effectiveness of the government’s approach, with several accusing the administration of responding to recurring attacks with statements rather than preventive action.
Social activist Nanle Bamshak said Mutfwang had disappointed residents who supported him in the 2023 election, alleging that the governor was increasingly focused on his political future ahead of 2027.
Another caller, Peter Alamba, said residents were tired of what he described as repeated condolence messages and assurances whenever attacks occurred.
Polycarp Bitrus similarly accused the government of failing to adequately address recurring violence, alleging that communities were being displaced while official responses remained largely rhetorical.
John Fadung, who said he had supported Mutfwang since the 2023 election, also expressed disappointment with the governor’s handling of insecurity.
The residents’ criticism comes amid continuing concerns over attacks on communities in Plateau, with Mutfwang maintaining that security and protection of lives remain priorities of his administration.
