Pensioners Seek Tinubu’s Intervention Over Unpaid Palliative, Transport Relief

The Federal Parastatals and Private Sector Pensioners Association of Nigeria (FEPPPAN) has asked President Bola Tinubu to address two outstanding concerns affecting retirees: access to the newly approved N70,000 monthly transport allowance for public servants and payment of the N25,000 subsidy-removal palliative announced in October 2023.

The association said the delay in providing relief to eligible pensioners had left retirees facing rising living costs without support comparable to measures being introduced for serving workers.

In a statement signed by its President-General, Elder Benjamin Amako, and General Secretary, Franklin Erinle, FEPPPAN called for immediate presidential intervention.

The association argued that transport costs were also a major expense for retirees, who travel for medical appointments, purchase essential goods and undertake economic activities to supplement their pensions.

It questioned the basis for excluding pensioners from the transport allowance, saying they faced the same increases in fares and other essential expenses.

FEPPPAN stressed that its demand was not an objection to the allowance approved for serving public servants, but a call for retirees to receive similar consideration as the government responds to economic hardship.

It added that pensioners relying on fixed monthly incomes continued to contend with the cost of food, medication and transportation while awaiting the promised palliative.
