African Action Congress presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, Omoyele Sowore, has said Nigerians should not be arrested or prosecuted for criticising or insulting President Bola Tinubu.
Sowore made the remarks on Monday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he argued that freedom of expression is protected under a democratic system.
He said criticism or name-calling directed at the president should not be treated as a criminal offence.
Sowore also argued that Tinubu understands the importance of allowing citizens to express their views, noting that the president has previously said he did not want people arrested over comments directed at him.
According to Sowore, Tinubu himself has used strong language against political opponents and others in the past.
He said any intelligence or security officer who ordered the arrest of a citizen solely for criticising the president would be acting contrary to democratic principles.
Sowore maintained that Nigerians should be free to speak their minds without facing arrest simply for expressing opinions about the president.
