Abia State Governor Alex Otti has recounted how he narrowly escaped an alleged assassination attempt in Abuja while pursuing his gubernatorial ambition in 2015.
Otti said about 12 gunmen came to Maitama, Abuja, in July that year intending to kill him, but arrived shortly after he had left the location.
Speaking in Umuahia on Thursday at a solemn assembly and covenant renewal service organised by the Abia State Government, the governor said the attackers believed he was still inside the building.
“They shot two persons. They were looking for me, but God had taken me away,” Otti recalled.
He said the gunmen searched the premises after failing to find him and then moved into an adjoining compound, where they allegedly stripped the place.
“They finished; they couldn’t find me. They were about 12,” he said.
“They jumped into the next compound and stripped the whole place. They thought I was there, but I had left.”
Otti expressed gratitude to God for what he described as his escape from the gunmen’s bullets.
He said the solemn assembly was organised to rededicate Abia State to God and ensure that the state remained under God’s control rather than that of fetish idols and evil societies.
Earlier, the Coordinator of the Solemn Assembly and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uzor Nwachukwu, said Abia had been in captivity for many years before Otti emerged as governor.
Nwachukwu said he believed God raised Otti to rescue the state, describing that belief as part of the reason for the rededication service.
