The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed more than 100 sacks of empty alcoholic beverage bottles recovered from a residential property in Lagos over suspicions they were being gathered for counterfeit drink production.
The bottles were discovered at 322B Meiran Road, Agbado Oke-Odo, during an operation by the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate following intelligence about activities at the location.
Speaking in a video released by NAFDAC on Friday, an assistant director in the directorate, Kunle Ojo, said officers found bottles of different sizes and brands stored beneath tarpaulins in the building.
Some of the containers carried alcoholic beverage labels, raising concerns that they could be reused to package counterfeit products.
Ojo said the agency suspected the bottles were being collected for distribution to people involved in producing fake alcoholic drinks. He did not identify any suspects or announce arrests in the statement.
NAFDAC said the recovered bottles were destroyed to prevent their potential reuse.
Ojo also condemned the use of a residential property for activities suspected to be connected with counterfeit production, stressing that the operation was part of efforts to protect public health.
He urged residents to report suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office, saying information from communities could help the agency disrupt the production and distribution of counterfeit goods.
