APC chieftain Joe Igbokwe has urged voters in the South-East and other parts of southern Nigeria to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, arguing that the president should serve two terms in office.
Speaking at a political gathering, Igbokwe dismissed the prospect of Tinubu being defeated after his first term, claiming that the president had built a strong political base since winning the 2023 election.
“Asiwaju must rule for eight years. And all of them put together cannot beat him,” he said, adding that opponents would struggle to dislodge Tinubu now that he was in power.
Igbokwe also credited Tinubu with helping Muhammadu Buhari secure the presidency, arguing that Tinubu should receive the same opportunity to serve two terms as his predecessor.
“He was the one, almost single-handedly, made Buhari the president of Nigeria,” Igbokwe said, claiming he had been involved in the political process that brought Buhari to power.
The APC chieftain called for greater cooperation among southern Nigerians, citing the region’s population, educational achievements and contributions to national development as reasons for a stronger collective political voice.
He specifically appealed to voters in the South-East to back Tinubu, suggesting that support for the president could encourage political reciprocity from other regions in future elections.
Igbokwe’s comments come as political parties and their supporters begin mobilising ahead of the 2027 presidential election. His assertion that Tinubu will complete two terms reflects his position as an APC supporter, rather than an established outcome of the election.
