Moghalu rejects Atiku campaign role: ‘I was not consulted’

Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) deputy governor, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, has rejected his inclusion in Atiku Abubakar’s 2027 presidential campaign policy team, saying he was neither consulted nor asked for his consent.

Moghalu reacted after the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential campaign listed him among members of its Policy Team, headed by economist and banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

In a statement, Moghalu said he was surprised to see his name included in the campaign structure.

“For the record, I was not consulted and did not give my consent to my name being published as a member of the ADC candidate’s policy team,” he said.

He added that he was not part of Atiku’s team in any capacity.

“I am NOT, in fact, a member of Atiku’s policy team, even unofficially or in any advisory capacity,” Moghalu said.

Moghalu said he had withdrawn from partisan politics in Nigeria since 2022 and maintained a non-partisan position in national affairs.

“I am not a member or sympathizer of any political party in Nigeria,” he said.

He said his current work includes leading the Institute for Governance and Economic Transformation (IGET Africa), a non-partisan public policy think tank and executive education academy. He is also chief executive officer of Sogato Strategies, a geopolitical risk and regulatory strategy advisory firm.

“I remain committed to my country, Nigeria and its progress, but such commitment does not have to entail ANY partisan alignment. I have adopted the path of statesmanship, not partisanship,” he said.

Atiku’s campaign unveiled its 2027 structure on Thursday, naming Kashim Ibrahim-Imam as chairman, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai as deputy chairman and Senator Austin Akobundu as director-general and campaign manager.

The campaign’s published structure listed Moghalu as a member of the Policy Team, alongside other figures including Prof. Mohammed Sagagi, Prof. Mustapha Akinkunmi and Senator Abdul Ningi.
