Knorr Joins Abia Women to Celebrate Culture, Food at 2026 August Meeting

The 2026 August Meeting celebration in Abia State brought together women from different parts of Nigeria and the diaspora for a day centred on culture, community, empowerment and shared traditions, with seasoning brand Knorr joining the celebration in Umuahia.

The grand finale was held on Friday, August 28, at the New Government House, Umuahia, bringing the annual gathering to a close with activities designed to recognise the contributions of women while strengthening social connections and encouraging their participation in the development of the state.

Organised by the Office of the Wife of the Governor of Abia State in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs, this year’s event was held under the theme, “Abia Women: Empowered to Thrive.” The programme provided an avenue for women from Abia communities and beyond to reconnect with their heritage, celebrate their achievements and reinforce the importance of community.

For Knorr, the occasion also provided an opportunity to highlight one of the strongest elements of cultural gatherings: food.

Across Igbo communities, food remains closely connected to family, heritage and celebration. Traditional meals prepared for relatives returning home, recipes handed down through generations and dishes served during important gatherings all contribute to preserving cultural identity.

That connection between food and community was reflected in Knorr’s participation in the August Meeting. The brand joined the celebration by sharing food packs prepared with its seasoning, using the gesture to recognise the women whose efforts help sustain traditions and make cultural gatherings meaningful.

The event itself featured a range of activities aimed at celebrating and supporting women. Female entrepreneurs received business grants, while raffle draws and prizes added to the entertainment and excitement of the gathering.

There were also march-past exhibitions, networking opportunities and the distribution of goodie bags, creating a programme that combined celebration with activities focused on women’s empowerment and community engagement.

The presence of women from Nigeria and the diaspora further reflected the broad social significance of the August Meeting. Beyond the formal programme, the gathering provided an opportunity for participants to reconnect with one another and celebrate traditions that continue to shape family and community life.

Food was an important part of that cultural connection. Meals prepared during celebrations often carry memories and family traditions, while recipes passed between generations provide a link between the past and present.

For Knorr, the August Meeting offered a platform to celebrate that relationship between food and togetherness while recognising the women who help preserve it.

Speaking on the brand’s participation, Damilola Dania, Foods Demand Creation Lead at Unilever Nigeria Plc, said the connection created through shared meals was central to Knorr’s involvement in the event.

“Some of life’s most meaningful connections are created over food. As a brand that believes in the power of good food to unite people, we are delighted to be part of this celebration and to add our flavour to it. We are proud to celebrate the women who continue to keep traditions alive and to be part of moments that bring families and communities together,” Dania said.

The brand’s participation consequently placed food alongside the broader themes of culture and empowerment that defined the celebration. By sharing food packs prepared with its seasoning, Knorr sought to add to an occasion where women, families and communities came together around shared traditions.

The August Meeting itself remains closely associated with communal gatherings, where cultural identity is expressed through interactions, family reunions, traditional activities and food. For many participants, these elements provide an opportunity to reconnect with customs and relationships that extend beyond the event itself.

In Abia, the 2026 celebration combined that cultural dimension with programmes intended to support women economically and socially. The business grants for female entrepreneurs formed part of the event’s empowerment focus, while networking and other activities created additional opportunities for interaction among participants.

The combination of empowerment and cultural celebration also shaped the wider significance of the gathering. The theme, “Abia Women: Empowered to Thrive,” placed emphasis on the role of women in building stronger families and communities while celebrating their heritage.

Knorr’s involvement complemented that focus by drawing attention to food as another way communities maintain their identity. Traditional dishes and family recipes can preserve memories and cultural practices, while preparing and sharing meals creates opportunities for people to connect.

The grand finale at the New Government House therefore brought together several aspects of the August Meeting tradition: celebration, cultural identity, women’s empowerment and community.

For Knorr, the event was an opportunity to celebrate the women who continue to pass food traditions from one generation to another and to participate in a gathering where food served as part of the connection between people.

As women from Abia and the diaspora came together in Umuahia, the 2026 August Meeting reinforced the enduring relationship between culture, food and community. Knorr’s participation added its own contribution to a celebration built around the traditions, relationships and women helping to keep them alive.
