OYE-EKITI, Nigeria — The management of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has suspended two students with immediate effect following allegations of targeted cyberbullying against the institution’s embattled, suspended Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, James Iyanuoluwa Adio.
The disciplinary action was confirmed in an official statement signed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tajudeen Opoola.
According to university authorities, the two suspended students—identified as Alao Iyanuoluwa Odunayo and Olawale Abiodun Samuel—will remain barred from academic activities pending the final outcome of an ongoing investigation.
Retaliatory Cyberbullying and Extortion Claims
The university management revealed that Odunayo and Samuel allegedly conspired to leak and circulate sensitive, private footage of Adio across major social media platforms.
The investigation indicates the malicious leak was a retaliatory act linked to an online extortion plot. The suspended students reportedly demanded financial payouts from the student union leader, weaponizing his private media online when he failed to meet their monetary demands.
“The university is determined to rid itself of actions capable of bringing its name into disrepute,” Professor Opoola stated, emphasizing that the temporary suspension is an interim safeguard to protect institutional integrity while the disciplinary committee concludes its findings.

According to an official briefing by the University Registrar, Mufutau Ibrahim, management uncovered an unauthorized scheme that forced freshers to pay a mandatory ₦1,000 fee for practical sessions. A preliminary fact-finding panel traced a ₦700,000 lump-sum transfer from those illicit collections directly into the personal bank account of SUG President Adio.
Management swiftly suspended Adio alongside the Deputy Dean of Student Affairs, Banji Rildwan Olaleye, and the Director of Educational Technology, Olanrewaju Patrick Ogunjobi, for financial impropriety and abuse of office.
National Student Bodies Intervene
The rapid sequence of events—beginning with corporate extortion claims and ending with the malicious leak of private student videos—has created intense unrest across the Oye-Ekiti campus community.
The online leaks grew prominent enough to draw the attention of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), which has reportedly stepped in to monitor both the ethical breaches regarding digital privacy and the integrity of the university’s anti-extortion campaign.
