Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has approved N400 million for bursaries, scholarships and other financial assistance to 13,360 students of Ondo origin studying in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
The beneficiaries include 11,907 students receiving bursaries and 614 scholarship recipients, while 239 students in the Law School, 500 medical students undergoing clinical training and 100 physically challenged students will also receive support.
Aiyedatiwa announced the commencement of the 2026 programme on Tuesday at the Cocoa Conference Centre in Akure, describing education as a key component of his administration’s development agenda.
He said the state’s 2026 budget had allocated resources to the education sector, including plans for the construction and rehabilitation of 500 basic schools.
The governor also highlighted the state’s digital literacy initiative, under which tablets are being distributed to students in 50 public schools to improve access to digital learning and skills.
Aiyedatiwa said his administration was also investing in teachers and had recognised outstanding students, teachers and National Youth Service Corps award recipients.
Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, said the N400 million approval demonstrated the governor’s commitment to supporting students from the state.
Ajibefun disclosed that the government had separately released N633.918 million to cover 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination registration fees for students in public secondary schools.
He also said Aiyedatiwa had approved the immediate implementation of the Federal Government’s agreement with unions on a new salary structure for workers in the state’s tertiary institutions.
According to the commissioner, the government has also increased subvention to the institutions to support implementation of the new salary structure.
