Dame Helen Mirren Addresses London Street Harassment Over Israel Views
Academy Award-winning actress Dame Helen Mirren has broken her silence following a street confrontation in London that recently sparked a hate crime investigation.
The incident occurred when Mirren and her husband, filmmaker Taylor Hackford, were accosted while walking through the Tower Hill neighborhood of East London. Video footage of the encounter—which recently surfaced and went viral online—shows a man filming the couple while shouting hostile rhetoric, calling Mirren an “evil Zionist b****” and accusing her of supporting Palestinian displacement.
The Metropolitan Police initially reviewed the footage as a potential hate-related offense. However, following consultations with Mirren and Hackford, authorities ultimately decided not to pursue a formal investigation.
Targeted “By Mistake” Under Misplaced Anger
Speaking at the Taormina Film Festival in Italy, where she was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award, Mirren addressed the confrontation publicly for the first time. The actress suggested her harasser acted out of unstable, hyper-emotionalism and fundamentally misunderstood her perspective.
“I believe the individual acted out of misplaced anger and incorrectly interpreted my views,” Mirren reflected, describing the encounter as an attack by someone who was clearly unstable.
During the recorded exchange, Hackford actively intervened, physically placing himself between the man and Mirren while demanding the individual leave them alone.
A Nuanced, Lifelong Relationship with Israel
Mirren used her platform at the festival to outline her highly complex, decades-long history with Israel—a position that defies simple political labels.

Mirren recalled how post-World War II realities shaped her upbringing. Born just after the war, she grew up under the heavy shadow of the Holocaust, which instilled an urgent belief in her parents’ generation that a Jewish homeland was an absolute necessity.
However, her firsthand experiences volunteering on a kibbutz in the late 1960s also exposed her to the regional friction. She noted that even during that era of intense idealism, she witnessed problematic events, including the displacement of Palestinian residents from their homes in Jerusalem.
Criticisms of Modern Policy and “Growing Extremism”
While Mirren has previously stated she believes Israel must exist “for all of eternity because of the Holocaust,” her recent remarks leveled significant criticism against modern Israeli policies.
The actress noted that researching her role for the 2023 biographical film Golda challenged her earlier, purely idealistic assumptions about the country. Drawing historical parallels to expanding empires, she warned that no nation is immune to repeating historical mistakes that cause human suffering.
While reaffirming her deep ties to Israel’s artistic and intellectual communities, she voiced sharp concern over what she characterized as a modern rise in political extremism and intolerance.
Defending Tom Hardy Amid ‘MobLand’ Rumors
Outside of the political controversy, Mirren also addressed heavy media speculation regarding her current Paramount+ crime drama, MobLand.
Reports had recently circulated alleging intense behind-the-scenes friction during the production of Season 2, culminating in the reported exit of leading man Tom Hardy over disruptive onset behavior. Rumors suggested Hardy had repeatedly kept co-stars Mirren and Pierce Brosnan waiting on set.
Mirren flatly dismissed any personal animosity or lingering feuds with her co-star.
“I love Tom. I think he’s the most amazing actor,” Mirren told reporters in Deadline coverage, adding she would work with him again “in a f***ing heartbeat.”
“The creative process is very challenging. As long as what’s on the screen is fantastic, I’m totally chilled with however anyone gets there. Tom has the kindest heart… my support of him is genuine and heartfelt.”
The sophomore season of the Guy Ritchie-directed series is scheduled to debut on Paramount+ later this year, with Mirren publicly hoping Hardy will return for a potential third season.
