The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 19-year-old woman in the Oke Sopen area of Ijebu-Igbo, while police intensify efforts to apprehend another suspect said to have fled the area.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, August 30, 2026, after the victim went to collect a key in the area. According to her account, she was allegedly accosted by two men while leaving the location and dragged into a building, where she said she was sexually assaulted.
The victim, whose identity has been withheld, identified the two alleged attackers as Bolu and Ayo in a video account obtained by PUNCH Metro. She said she was familiar with one of the men because she often greeted him, but said she did not know the other alleged assailant.
“On Sunday, I went to collect a key at a place. When I got there, I collected the key from the person. As I was leaving, two guys, Bolu and Ayo, dragged me inside and gang-raped me. I only know one of them whom I often greet but I don’t know the second guy,” she said.
The police said the matter was formally reported at the Ijebu-Igbo Divisional Police Station on Tuesday, September 1, at about 10:10 a.m. The complaint was lodged by the victim’s mother over the alleged incident, which police said occurred at a residence in Odo Idi Scale, Oke Sopen, Ijebu-Igbo.
Following the complaint, officers attached to the Ijebu-Igbo Division began investigating the allegation and visited the location where the incident was reported to have occurred. Police said the scene was secured as investigators worked to obtain material that could assist the investigation.
The command also said the victim was immediately provided with a Police Medical Form and taken to the General Hospital for medical examination and care.
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, Opeyemi Oluborode, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Thursday.
According to Oluborode, investigators subsequently tracked one of the suspects and arrested him. The suspect was identified as Ayomide Kamula, aged 20.
Kamula is currently being held by the police while investigators conduct further inquiries into the allegation and establish the circumstances surrounding the reported assault.
Police, however, said the second suspect has not yet been arrested. The command identified the alleged fleeing accomplice as Boye Balogun, male, and said an intensive search had been launched to locate and apprehend him.
“Following preliminary inquiries, operatives successfully tracked down and arrested one suspect, identified as Ayomide Kamula, aged 20,” Oluborode said.
“The suspect is currently in police custody undergoing interrogation while robust operational measures and intelligence-led searches have been intensified to track down and apprehend the fleeing co-suspect, identified as Boye Balogun, ‘m’, who remains at large.”
The police said the investigation has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further action. The transfer is expected to allow investigators to conduct a more detailed examination of the allegation, including the accounts provided by the victim and information obtained during the preliminary investigation.
The medical examination arranged by the police forms part of the investigation into the allegation and the care being provided to the survivor. Police said the decision to escort the victim to hospital was taken after the complaint was received, in line with its stated survivor-centred approach.
The development has also prompted a strong warning from the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, who said the command would maintain a zero-tolerance position towards sexual offences and other forms of sexual and gender-based violence.
Ojajuni assured the victim’s family that the command would pursue the investigation thoroughly and discreetly. He also said the police would continue efforts to locate the suspect who remains at large.
The commissioner stressed that the command would leave no stone unturned in its efforts to ensure that anyone found responsible is brought before the law.
“The CP reiterated the Command’s firm commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against sexual offences across the state,” the police statement said.
“He assured the victim’s family and the general public that a thorough, discreet investigation is underway and that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring the fleeing suspect is brought to book to face the full weight of the law.”
The arrest comes as the police investigation moves beyond the initial complaint and scene examination, with officers now expected to establish the full circumstances of the alleged incident and determine the respective roles of the suspects.
For now, police have confirmed the arrest of Kamula while Balogun remains wanted in connection with the allegation. The command has not indicated that the investigation has been concluded, and the allegations remain subject to the outcome of the police inquiry and any subsequent legal proceedings.
The incident has drawn attention to the response of law enforcement authorities following allegations of sexual violence. In this case, the Ogun command said it moved to secure the reported scene, arrange medical examination for the victim and begin efforts to identify and apprehend those allegedly involved.
The police have also urged the public to understand that the investigation is ongoing as officers work to locate the remaining suspect. The command’s position, as communicated by the commissioner, is that sexual offences will not be tolerated and that suspects found culpable will be made to face the law.
The victim’s account remains a central part of the investigation, while the police continue to gather evidence and question the suspect already in custody. Further developments are expected as investigators work to establish what happened at the Oke Sopen residence on August 30.
With one suspect arrested and another still at large, the immediate focus of the Ogun State Police Command is now on completing the investigation, securing additional evidence and locating the fleeing suspect identified as Boye Balogun.
