APC Campaign Council Urges Members to Respect Atiku Despite Row Over Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has urged its members to treat former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar with the respect due to his former office and status as a presidential candidate, despite criticising his manner of addressing President Bola Tinubu.

The council’s position followed public reactions to Atiku’s decision to refer to Tinubu as “Bola”, which the ruling party’s campaign body described as a breach of decorum.

In a statement on Monday, the council’s spokesperson, Dele Alake, called on APC leaders, spokespersons, members and support groups to maintain civility in their dealings with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate.

The council said political disagreements should not prevent its members from extending the courtesies due to Atiku as a former vice-president and presidential contender.

It accused Atiku of allowing political rivalry and ambition to influence his public conduct since his defeat in the 2023 presidential election.

However, the campaign council said it would not adopt what it characterised as Atiku’s approach to political engagement.

It said its campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election would focus on issues affecting Nigerians, the APC’s programmes and Tinubu’s record in office, including what it described as the administration’s efforts to move the country from reforms to prosperity.
