The Federal Government has warned Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) that officials will be held accountable for poor performance and failure to implement government reforms.
The Director-General of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council, Princess Zahrah Audu, gave the warning at a high-level strategic engagement and press briefing organised by the Federal Ministry of Finance.
Audu said public institutions must deliver measurable results and demonstrate accountability in line with President Bola Tinubu’s stance against non-performance.
At the meeting, themed “MDA Data Collection and Harmonisation,” she presented findings from the Business Environment Enhancement Programme Accelerator, which assessed federal agencies’ implementation of reforms.
The assessment found that 16 MDAs had fully implemented the reforms evaluated. However, recent mystery shopping exercises showed that agencies’ responsiveness declined after active monitoring ended.
Audu said the government would continue monitoring agency performance through mystery shopping exercises and a live performance tracker. She also pointed to the forthcoming end-of-year Business Facilitation Act Compliance Ranking as another mechanism for assessing compliance.
She said the monitoring systems were intended to identify service delivery gaps and ensure agencies remained accountable for their commitments.
“The message was clear: performance monitoring is continuous, compliance is measurable, and MDAs must be prepared to account for their results,” Audu said.
She added that the Federal Ministry of Finance was placing greater emphasis on institutional performance, responsiveness and compliance with reforms in its engagements with government agencies.
