Four people were critically injured on Tuesday when a container-laden truck crashed into several vehicles and nine commercial motorcycles at First Gate, Mile 2, Lagos State.
The victims, three men and a woman, reportedly suffered multiple fractures after the Mack truck, carrying a 40-foot container, lost control and collided with a truck carrying a 20-foot container, a T4 commercial bus and the nine motorcyclists.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said preliminary findings pointed to an apparent brake failure as the cause of the crash.
LASTMA operatives rescued the injured victims at the scene and handed them over to policemen from the Roro Police Division, who took them to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The agency also managed traffic around the crash site and helped remove the damaged vehicles and other obstructions to restore movement.
The Mack truck driver and other drivers involved were handed over to the police for investigation and possible prosecution.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, sympathised with the victims and their families and urged motorists and commercial transport operators to ensure their vehicles were mechanically fit before using the roads.
He also warned articulated vehicle operators to pay close attention to braking systems, tyres, steering and other safety-critical components.
Bakare-Oki further raised concern over the use of commercial motorcycles on restricted highways, noting their vulnerability around articulated vehicles.
