Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has promised to clear 11 months of salary arrears owed teachers under the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
Alia said his administration would pay an additional month of the outstanding arrears alongside teachers’ regular monthly salaries until the backlog is cleared.
The governor made the commitment in Makurdi during the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration at IBB Square. He was represented by his deputy, Sam Ode.
Alia said his administration remained committed to improving teachers’ welfare, working conditions and professional development.
He noted that the government had adopted a harmonised retirement age for teachers and introduced an automated payroll system to strengthen accountability and reduce leakages in salary payments.
According to the governor, more than 9,000 teachers had been recruited, while over 400 classrooms had been constructed or renovated. He added that the government had supplied furniture to schools and introduced retraining programmes for teachers.
Alia commended teachers for their contribution to the education of children in the state and praised SUBEB Executive Chairman Grace Adagba for her efforts in basic education.
The Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, Margaret Adamu, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Basic Education, Bibiana Tyoishi, also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the teaching and learning environment.
