Abia Governor Alex Otti says he will leave the stage in 2031 without imposing a successor or playing godfather.
Otti stated this on Thursday in Umuahia when he welcomed former SDP governorship candidate, Ngozi Johnson Chukwunenye, and her supporters to the Labour Party.
He said succession in the state must be driven by competence, not by sit-tight politics, adding that Abians who have tasted good governance will not accept a reversal.
The governor assured that his successor will be better than him and will emerge through a collective process where party stakeholders assess candidates and agree on the best.
He maintained he does not want to be a godfather and does not accommodate godfatherism.
Otti also repeated his stand that he will not vie for any elective office after his second term, saying leadership must be handed to younger and better-equipped people.
He said his government is already preparing that next generation through the Abia Leadership Academy, which recently graduated over 1,080 youths between 16 and 25 years old.
According to him, the administration prioritized the restoration of Aba and Umuahia at the beginning and is now pushing development into hinterland communities across the state.
