A notorious bandit commander operating in Zamfara State, Kachalla Sani, popularly known as “Yellow,” was reportedly killed during a joint security operation in Anka Local Government Area on July 10, 2026.
According to security sources, the operation involved troops of Operation Fansan Yamma, police personnel and local vigilante groups who engaged armed bandits in a fierce gun battle following an attack on construction workers at Dan Jibga Market.
The sources said Yellow was among those killed during the exchange of fire, bringing an end to the activities of one of the region’s most feared bandit leaders.
Reports indicated that following the operation, residents gathered in large numbers after news of his death spread across the area. The development was said to have generated widespread reactions among communities that had endured years of insecurity linked to bandit activities.
For years, Yellow was regarded as one of the most influential bandit commanders operating across Anka, Bukkuyum, Maru and surrounding local government areas.
Security intelligence reports have linked him to numerous criminal activities, including mass kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling, attacks on villages and motorists, and violent raids that displaced thousands of residents from farming communities across Zamfara State.
Authorities also considered his network a major component of the banditry infrastructure operating in parts of the North-West, making him a high-value target for security agencies.
The operation formed part of ongoing offensives aimed at dismantling criminal enclaves and disrupting armed groups operating across the region.
Despite the reported success, security analysts have warned that the death of a major commander could trigger renewed violence as rival groups attempt to fill the resulting leadership vacuum.
There are already reports of fresh attacks in parts of Tsafe Local Government Area, where armed groups allegedly carried out abductions and looting incidents in the days following the operation.
In response, security agencies have intensified patrols and clearance operations across Anka, Tsafe and neighbouring communities to prevent possible reprisals and maintain stability.
Experts described the development as a significant milestone in ongoing efforts to combat banditry in the North-West, while cautioning that the fragmented structure of criminal groups often results in power struggles and retaliatory attacks after the removal of key leaders.
Residents of Anka expressed relief at the reported elimination of the bandit leader, describing it as a positive step toward restoring peace and security in the area after years of fear and disruption.
Security agencies have reiterated their commitment to sustaining operations against bandit groups and other criminal elements until lasting peace is achieved across Zamfara State and the wider North-West region.
