“Women Aren’t Less Than”: Team USA Women’s Hockey Responds to Trump’s Locker Room Joke
Members of the United States women’s hockey team are speaking out after a joke made by former President Donald Trump during a celebratory phone call with the men’s team sparked widespread backlash, igniting renewed debate over gender respect in sports.
The controversy unfolded shortly after both the U.S. men’s and women’s hockey teams captured gold medals at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina. While the men celebrated a 2–1 victory over Canada in their locker room, Trump called to congratulate them and invite the team to attend Tuesday’s State of the Union address.
However, during the call — which was recorded and later circulated widely on social media — Trump joked that he might “also have to invite the women.” Laughter from players in the room followed, setting off criticism from fans and commentators who felt the remark diminished the women’s historic achievement.
Hilary Knight: “A Good Learning Point”
U.S. women’s captain Hilary Knight addressed the moment publicly during an appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter, calling the joke “distasteful” but acknowledging that the men’s team was “in a tough spot.”
“I think this is just a really good learning point to really focus on how we talk about women — not only in sport, but in industry,” Knight said. “Women aren’t less than, and our achievements shouldn’t be overshadowed by anything else other than how great they are.”
Knight emphasized that she does not want what she described as a “quick lapse” to overshadow the team’s historic Olympic performance. Speaking later at a press conference hosted by her Seattle Torrent teammates, she made clear that she would not take responsibility for explaining others’ behavior.
“These women are amazing,” Knight said, gesturing toward fellow Team USA stars Alex Carpenter, Cayla Barnes, and Hannah Bilka seated beside her. “Whatever’s going on should never outshine or minimize their work and our success on the world stage.”
A Historic Olympic Run
The women’s team’s gold medal victory was not just another championship — it was historic.
With the win, Knight became the most decorated American hockey player in history, earning her second Olympic gold to go along with three silver medals. She also set the all-time Olympic scoring record in U.S. women’s hockey during the 2026 Games.
Forward Kelly Pannek, who plays professionally for the Minnesota Frost, described the experience as “special,” noting that both the men’s and women’s teams had developed mutual respect in the Olympic Village.
“With the phone call specifically, it’s not surprising, to be frank,” Pannek said. “So I don’t know why we expect differently, but I think for us, it’s about getting back to the focus on our team and what our team accomplished.”
Their accomplishment was dominant. The U.S. women set a record at the Milan-Cortina Games by holding opponents scoreless for 331 minutes and 23 seconds — a defensive performance widely described as one of the most commanding stretches in Olympic hockey history.
Support From Teammates and Peers
Not all reaction centered on criticism.
Hayley Scamurra, now playing for the Montréal Victoire, said on The Hockey Lifers podcast that the overwhelming public support for the women’s team outweighed any negative feelings stemming from the phone call.
“I think the call was what it was,” she said. “The outpouring of love and support we’ve received has outweighed any other feelings.”
On the men’s side, several players addressed the backlash. Jack Hughes, who scored the game-winning goal against Canada, told NBC’s TODAY show that the women’s team knows how much support they have from their male counterparts.
“If there was a video of us watching their gold medal game,” Hughes said, “we would have looked like the biggest superfans of all time.”
His brother Quinn Hughes also played a pivotal role during the tournament, scoring an overtime goal against Sweden in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, goaltender Jeremy Swayman acknowledged that the men’s team “should have reacted differently” during the call.
“We are so excited for the women’s team,” Swayman said. “We have so much respect for them, and to share that gold medal with them is something we’re forever grateful for.”
Invitation Declined
While the majority of the men’s team attended the State of the Union address in Washington, the women’s team declined the invitation, citing professional and academic commitments. Trump later said he looks forward to hosting the women’s team at a future date.
The White House did not respond publicly to comments from the players regarding the controversy.
A Broader Conversation on Gender in Sports
The incident has reignited long-standing conversations about respect and equality in women’s athletics.
Women’s hockey, in particular, has fought for recognition, investment, and equitable compensation for decades. The formation of the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) marked a significant milestone in building sustainable professional opportunities for female players in North America.
Critics on social media argued that the laughter in the locker room symbolized a broader issue — that women’s achievements are too often treated as secondary, even when they are historic.
“It is never just locker room talk,” one social media user wrote. “The U.S. Women’s Hockey Team deserves way better.”
Keeping the Focus on Gold
Despite the controversy, players have consistently emphasized unity and perspective.
For Knight and her teammates, the focus remains on what they accomplished: delivering one of the most dominant Olympic performances in American hockey history and cementing their place in the sport’s record books.
“This was the best American women’s hockey team — the best American team — we’ve ever put together on a world stage,” Knight said.
As debate continues, the team’s message is clear: celebrate the gold, respect the achievement, and recognize that excellence in sport transcends gender.
