WASHINGTON, D.C. — The administration of President Donald Trump has introduced a limited-edition United States passport featuring the president’s image as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.
President Trump unveiled the commemorative design on Friday through his Truth Social account, sharing images of the redesigned passport pages. One page features a portrait of Trump standing behind the Resolute Desk with the Declaration of Independence displayed in the background, accompanied by his signature.
The special passport is scheduled to become available from July 6, according to the U.S. State Department, and will be issued only while supplies last.
Announcing the release, Trump described the document as “The U.S.A.’s New Passport, which says, ‘Welcome, but be good!’” Although that phrase accompanied his social media post, it does not appear on the passport pages shown in the official images.
The White House also promoted the document on its official X account, describing it as a “Patriot Passport.”
Limited availability
The commemorative passport will initially be available only to eligible U.S. citizens through a restricted application process.
Unlike standard passports, Americans cannot apply online or by mail for the special edition. Applicants must schedule an in-person appointment at the Washington Passport Agency or attend designated passport acceptance events created specifically for the commemorative release.
At launch, the State Department listed only two qualifying events, both taking place at the Washington Passport Agency, while noting that additional events may be announced later.
It remains unclear whether applicants visiting the Washington office for routine passport services will have the option of receiving the standard passport instead of the commemorative edition.
First living president featured on a passport
Current U.S. passports typically showcase historic American landmarks, national achievements such as the Apollo Moon landing, and iconic symbols including the Statue of Liberty.
The new commemorative edition marks the first time a sitting U.S. president has appeared inside an American passport.
An earlier version of the design, announced in April, featured only Trump’s portrait and a gold-coloured signature. The final version includes additional patriotic elements, including the number “250” to commemorate America’s semiquincentennial.
Part of broader anniversary celebrations
The passport forms part of a wider campaign commemorating the United States’ 250th anniversary.
The U.S. Mint has also announced plans to release a commemorative gold coin bearing President Trump’s likeness as part of the celebrations. The administration has further indicated that Trump will become the first sitting president to have his signature appear on newly issued American banknotes.
Since returning to office, Trump has also pursued several initiatives aimed at leaving a lasting mark on federal institutions and landmarks. These efforts have included proposals to attach his name to prominent public facilities and plans to construct a large triumphal arch in Washington inspired by Paris’ Arc de Triomphe.
The commemorative passport is expected to remain a limited collector’s edition, with standard U.S. passports continuing to serve as the country’s primary international travel document.
