Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has commiserated with Sudan over the collapse of Al-Zaraa gold mine in West Kordofan that killed several artisanal miners.
Alake, in a statement posted on his social media page, said some miners are still missing as rescue operations continue.
He sent condolences to families of the victims and the people of Sudan.
“My thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the families who have lost loved ones and with the people of Sudan at this difficult time,” he said.
Speaking in his capacity as Chairman of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, the minister called for urgent support for rescue efforts and stronger safety frameworks for artisanal mining across the continent.
“As Chairman of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, I call for urgent support for the rescue efforts and stronger measures to improve safety, training and oversight in artisanal mining across our continent,” Alake stated.
He noted that the tragedy underlines the dangers artisanal miners face daily, stressing that safety must come first.
“No amount of gold is worth a human life,” he said.
