One person has been confirmed dead after an uncompleted four-storey building collapsed at Independence Layout in Enugu State on Sunday morning.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said the incident occurred at about 6am on September 13, 2026, with reports that other people may still be trapped beneath the rubble.
NEMA’s Press Unit said its Director-General, Zubaida Umar, directed the agency’s Enugu Operations Office to immediately deploy an emergency rescue team and coordinate the response with relevant authorities.
Responders were informed on arrival that people were trapped inside the collapsed structure and began searching the debris.
An excavator was brought to the site to assist rescuers in removing the rubble.
By 11:20am, the joint rescue team had recovered the body of a male victim from the debris, NEMA said.
The agency said rescue operations remained ongoing as emergency workers continued searching the site for possible survivors and additional victims.
The operation involves NEMA, the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Police Force, Enugu State Fire and Rescue Service, Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority and the state Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
