Lionel Messi reached 930 career goals on Sunday after scoring a spectacular free-kick, but Inter Miami surrendered a late lead to draw 2-2 with San Diego FC in Major League Soccer.
San Diego struck first in the 12th minute when Anders Dreyer raced onto Jeppe Tverskov’s pass before lifting the ball over Inter Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.
Messi levelled the contest 12 minutes later after he was fouled just outside the box. The Argentine curled his left-footed free-kick around the defensive wall and watched it clip the post before crossing the line.
The strike was Messi’s 20th MLS goal of the 2026 season and the 75th direct free-kick goal of his career.
According to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the goal also took Messi’s tally for Inter Miami to 101, just four days after he scored his 100th for the club in the Campeones Cup win over Cruz Azul.
Inter Miami appeared to have completed the comeback when Luis Suárez put the hosts ahead in the 74th minute.
But San Diego responded eight minutes from time, with Dreyer scoring his second goal of the night to restore parity and earn the visitors a point.
The result extended Inter Miami’s run of successive MLS draws to four. The club now has 12 wins, four defeats and 10 draws from its 26 league matches, leaving it on 46 points.
At 39, Messi continues to add to his career scoring record as he remains a key figure in Inter Miami’s season.
