Flamingos Target Historic Final Spot Against Brazil at U-17 World Cup

Nigeria’s Flamingos will seek their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final appearance when they face Brazil in Wednesday’s semi-final in Rabat, Morocco.

Akeem Busari’s side reached the last four after captain Azeezat Oduntan converted an 89th-minute penalty to secure a 1-0 quarter-final victory over Venezuela on Sunday. The penalty was awarded after Oluebube Umejiaku was fouled inside the box.

The semi-final marks Nigeria’s second appearance at this stage of the competition. The Flamingos previously reached the last four in 2022 and finished with the bronze medal in India.

Brazil, meanwhile, booked their semi-final place by recovering from a goal down to defeat China 2-1 in the quarter-finals. They had needed a penalty shootout to overcome Poland in the round of 16 after a 3-3 draw, winning 8-7.

The South Americans have shared the scoring responsibility across their squad, with nine different players finding the net at the tournament. Greise Kelly leads their scoring chart with three goals.

Busari has called on his players to maintain their determination as they pursue a place in the final.

“We want to give our best in the next match and show everyone what we can do,” he said after the victory over Venezuela.

The semi-final will take place on Wednesday, November 4, at Pitch 3 of the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat. Kick-off is scheduled for 6pm local time, 7pm in Nigeria.
