Adamu’s CAF elevation puts Nigeria’s football administration in focus

Nigeria’s preparations to host two major Confederation of African Football events in November and December will coincide with Samson Adamu’s confirmation as the body’s substantive General Secretary, drawing renewed attention to the country’s place in African football administration.

The Federal Government congratulated Adamu on his confirmation, with the National Sports Commission describing his appointment as recognition of the experience he has gained through senior roles at CAF.

Adamu previously served as the organisation’s Director of Competitions, Director of Tournaments and Events, and Acting General Secretary.

NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko said the appointment demonstrated the potential for Nigerian professionals to advance into leadership positions in international sports administration.

“Samson’s confirmation recognises the experience he has built within CAF. We congratulate him and wish him every success,” Dikko said.

Nigeria is scheduled to host the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly in Abuja on November 21, 2026, followed by the CAF Awards in Lagos on December 10.

Dikko said the events would support cooperation between Nigeria and CAF while creating business opportunities in hospitality, tourism, transport and media.

“The Federal Government remains committed to working with CAF to advance football and develop its commercial value,” he said.

He encouraged young Nigerians pursuing careers in sports administration to build the experience and competence needed to progress in the field. The commission also pledged continued cooperation with CAF, the Nigeria Football Federation and other stakeholders on football administration and commercial development.
