Wurukum Flyover Expansion to Increase Road Width in Makurdi

The Wurukum Flyover project in Makurdi, Benue State, is set for a design change that will widen its carriageways, following a request by Governor Hyacinth Alia to improve traffic flow around the busy Wurukum Roundabout.

Federal Controller of Works in Benue, Mukaila Danladi, said the federal and state governments had concluded plans for the expansion, but implementation would depend on approval of the revised design.

The project is currently 69.87 per cent complete. Danladi told the News Agency of Nigeria in Makurdi on Friday that the proposed changes had required a review of parts of the ongoing construction.

Under the original design, the flyover was to have a total width of 8.4 metres, including two 3.65-metre carriageways, a 0.7-metre walkway and a 0.4-metre median. The revised plan provides for carriageways measuring 10.3 metres on each side and a one-metre median.

Danladi said the additional road space was intended to improve movement around the junction. He acknowledged the disruption construction had caused for motorists and residents, adding that fresh traffic diversions might be introduced once the revised plan is approved.

“Immediately the review is approved, we would want to introduce some diversions around that location,” he said.

Some earlier diversions had been removed to ease movement, but the controller warned that restrictions could return as work on the expansion proceeds. He attributed delays in some sections to the design review and said construction could gather pace as the rainy season subsides.

The Federal Government began the flyover project on September 15, 2025, as part of the second phase of the Makurdi–9th Mile Road dualisation project.

Providing an update on the wider road scheme, Danladi said about 150 kilometres of the approximately 250-kilometre route had reached the layer before asphalt surfacing, while the final asphalt layer had been completed on around 87 kilometres.

The broader project is divided into five sections and covers approximately 250.6 kilometres, alongside the 15.8-kilometre Lafia Bypass. The Wurukum Flyover forms part of the first section.

The expansion is intended to improve traffic movement in Makurdi, although work on the revised design is yet to begin pending formal approval. Danladi urged motorists to follow traffic instructions and cooperate with construction teams.
