President Bola Tinubu has declared that petrol subsidy will not return, using the launch of his 2027 re-election campaign in Kaduna to defend the policy and urge Nigerians to reject claims by his political opponents.
Addressing supporters on Saturday, Tinubu said the subsidy regime belonged to the past and linked its removal to his administration’s pledge to tackle corruption and fuel smuggling.
“What is the past is the past, fuel subsidy is in our past, no more corruption, no more falsification of invoices, no more lies, no more smuggling of fuel,” he said.
The President also cautioned voters against being misled by politicians seeking their support ahead of the 2027 election.
“Be careful, watch them, don’t let them lie to you,” Tinubu told the crowd.
His remarks came amid a political dispute over the future of petrol subsidies, with African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential aspirant Atiku Abubakar having pledged to restore them. Tinubu’s administration has dismissed that proposal as propaganda.
Seeking another term, Tinubu urged Nigerians to support his bid, telling them their decisions would shape the country’s future.
“Your prosperity is here. Your future is in your hands, your fingerprints will reflect it,” he said.
He appealed to voters to give him another opportunity to lead, promising a better tomorrow if re-elected.
“May you give me the privilege to promise you once again of a better tomorrow,” the President added.
