Nigerian entertainer Broda Shaggi has spoken publicly about the physical and emotional toll of a gunshot injury that sidelined him for months, including fears that he might never perform the same way again.
The comedian, whose real name is Samuel Perry, disclosed in a YouTube video released on October 21 that he was shot on March 9 after completing a brand activation assignment with his team around Sango-Ota, Ogun State.
Shaggi said traffic slowed their departure because of a crowd nearby. He then heard a loud bang and discovered he was bleeding from his hip. He later lost consciousness and had no recollection of how he was taken to hospital.
“I didn’t want to die,” he recalled.
Beyond the immediate danger, the injury left him questioning whether he would regain the mobility needed for his energetic skits, dancing and music performances. He also worried that staying away from the entertainment scene for an extended period could make audiences forget him.
Shaggi said he had maintained an intense work routine since 2018, balancing content creation, music and travel. Even during his hospitalisation, he tried to keep working by writing material and developing a YouTube series, though seeing colleagues continue their careers was difficult while his own recovery remained uncertain.
After undergoing surgery in Nigeria, he continued to struggle with his injured leg. He said he eventually travelled to Dubai for further treatment and another operation after about four months of dealing with the injury and its complications.
The procedure helped him make progress. Shaggi said he can now stand without crutches, although he still uses them for additional support.
He expressed gratitude that the bullet struck his hip rather than his head or another vital organ, describing his survival as a second chance. He encouraged fans to celebrate his return instead of feeling sorry for him and said he intended to release new projects.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear publicly. The Ogun State Police Command previously said it could not confirm whether the incident occurred within its jurisdiction and urged the public not to circulate unverified claims while investigations continued.
