Ed Sheeran’s scheduled concerts at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, face uncertainty after severe weather disrupted preparations for the British singer’s weekend performances.
Sheeran is due to perform at the stadium on Friday and Saturday, but production work was interrupted on Thursday as crews prepared the outdoor venue for the shows.
According to TMZ, construction of the concert stage was temporarily halted because of weather conditions affecting the Northeast.
The stage had already been partly assembled when workers were instructed to stop further installation. Venue executives were also considering whether sections of the structure would have to be removed ahead of the expected conditions.
No final decision had been announced on whether either concert would be cancelled or postponed.
A source at the venue, however, said preparations remained largely on schedule, with most of the stage ready. Lighting was reportedly the main outstanding element, with workers testing equipment on Thursday evening.
The uncertainty adds to a series of issues surrounding Sheeran’s tour.
Rapper Macklemore was removed as an opening act amid controversy over his political views and public statements on the Israel-Gaza conflict. Macklemore said pressure connected to those views contributed to his removal, prompting criticism and support from some musicians and opening acts.
Sheeran later addressed the controversy during a concert in Philadelphia, saying he had not intended to present himself as a political activist.
“I don’t want to disappoint fans, and I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician,” he said.
Macklemore has since announced a series of “Free Palestine” tour dates, with proceeds set to support organisations providing aid to Palestinians.
Ticket refunds have also become an issue for some fans following changes to the tour lineup.
Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell said her office intervened after receiving consumer complaints over difficulties obtaining refunds.
Ticketmaster subsequently confirmed that eligible refund requests for the Gillette Stadium shows would be honoured.
