BENIN — Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has compared petrol prices in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, saying the commodity costs more than N3,000 per litre in the UK after conversion.
Okpebholo made the comparison on Thursday at the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” event in Edo State, where he also defended the economic reforms of the Federal Government.
The governor said he travelled to London the previous week and decided to compare fuel prices after discussions about the cost of petrol in Nigeria.
“When we complained about cost of petrol, I was in London last week. I told my friend, ‘Let’s go and buy fuel just to know the cost of fuel between Nigeria and England.’
“Let me tell you, after conversion, it’s about 3,000-something for one litre of fuel,” he said.
Okpebholo said the comparison showed that Nigerians were paying less for petrol than consumers in the UK.
“We are doing very well here. The President is stabilising the economy. He’s an economist,” he said.
The governor acknowledged the difficulties created by the ongoing economic reforms but said they would eventually produce results.
He compared the reforms to the take-off of an aircraft, arguing that the benefits would become more apparent once the economy reaches what he described as cruising level.
“I want to let you know, very soon Nigeria will be on the cruising level. Nigeria will be on a cruising level,” Okpebholo said.
He also pointed to road construction across the country as evidence of ongoing development under President Bola Tinubu.
“Look at the kind of roads that are being constructed today—concrete pavement all over Nigeria,” he said.
Okpebholo spoke while backing Federal Government efforts to address the deteriorated Benin-Asaba Road, a major route linking Edo and Delta states.
The event was organised as “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road”, amid concerns over the condition of the highway and the difficulties faced by motorists.
The governor also used the occasion to express support for Tinubu remaining in office beyond the 2027 election.
“Is Aso Rock vacant? Is Aso Rock vacant? So Aso Rock is not vacant,” he said.
Okpebholo also cited the Oba of Benin’s reported comment that “you don’t change a working President” in expressing his position on Tinubu.
He said the economic reforms would eventually move Nigeria to what he called a “cruising level” and expressed confidence in the direction of both Edo State and the country.
“That means even when Asiwaju leaves, whoever President that comes in the future after his… I want to let them know that Edo is in a safe hand. Nigeria is also in a safe hand,” he said.
The governor concluded by thanking participants for their concern about the Benin-Asaba Road.
