Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has accused suspected supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress of looting shops and destroying campaign billboards during a violent incident in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.
Keyamo said the incident occurred on Friday, September 18, 2026, and alleged that the attackers targeted billboards belonging to Tompolo’s Door-to-Door Campaign Organisation before invading shops in the community.
He made the allegations in a post on his X handle on Sunday, alongside a video purportedly showing the incident.
According to the minister, some of the attackers were armed and allegedly looted goods from shops. He also claimed that some law enforcement personnel accompanied the assailants.
Keyamo said he would not allow the matter to go unchallenged but urged his supporters against retaliatory action.
“I have warned everyone not to resort to self-help,” he said.
The minister also accused sections of the media and human rights groups of applying different standards in responding to political violence, arguing that similar attacks involving APC supporters would have attracted stronger condemnation.
He compared the Effurun incident with the recent blockade of Peter Obi’s entourage in Benue State, saying he had condemned the Benue incident but considered the Delta violence more serious.
Keyamo said he planned to petition the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, during the week, seeking a thorough investigation and prosecution of anyone found responsible.
He also called for disciplinary action against any security personnel found to have condoned the alleged looting or destruction.
The allegations came after a confrontation involving suspected NDC and APC supporters during an NDC mobilisation march in Effurun on Friday. The Delta State Government subsequently directed security agencies to investigate the incident and prosecute anyone found culpable.
The government also said political rivalry should not degenerate into violence or intimidation and maintained that political parties should be allowed to campaign peacefully across the state.
