The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old man identified as Rilwan over alleged involvement in illicit drug trafficking in the Apata area of Ibadan.
The suspect, a resident of the area, was arrested at about 8am on Saturday following intelligence on his alleged activities, according to the command.
Police operatives attached to the Iyaganku Area Command conducted surveillance before moving in to arrest him, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said in a statement on Sunday.
The command said officers recovered quantities of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, a white crystalline substance suspected to be methamphetamine and other substances believed to be illicit drugs.
Rilwan remains in police custody and is assisting investigators as they work to establish the source of the suspected drugs and determine the extent of his alleged involvement.
Police said the investigation would also seek to identify other people who may be connected to the suspected drug network.
Oyo State Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, said the command would sustain intelligence-led operations targeting illicit drug supply chains and other activities linked to criminality.
He described illicit drugs as a significant driver of crime and said the command would continue efforts to disrupt their distribution across the state.
The suspect is expected to be charged to court after preliminary investigations are concluded, subject to the outcome of the inquiry.
The command also urged residents to provide credible information that could help security agencies detect and disrupt criminal activities.
