The Nigerian Army has relocated 6 Brigade/Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) from Jalingo to Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State as part of efforts to strengthen its response to emerging security threats across the state.
The formation formally commenced operations from its new location on Tuesday following approval by the Chief of Army Staff, coming after the establishment of the 10 Division Nigerian Army Headquarters in Jalingo. The relocation is intended to reinforce the Army’s operational presence and sustain ongoing efforts to protect communities and improve security in the state.
Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, said the change in location would not alter the formation’s mandate. In a statement issued by the Brigade’s acting Assistant Director, Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, Akaliro said the focus would remain on consolidating previous operational gains while responding more aggressively to security challenges within the Brigade’s area of responsibility.
“The mandate and goals of the Brigade remain the same, despite the change in location. We will continue to do everything within our capacity to protect the people and their property and ensure that the peace being enjoyed in Taraba State is sustained,” he said.
Akaliro said the Brigade would combine kinetic and non-kinetic measures in carrying out its responsibilities. He also directed officers and soldiers to maintain discipline, professionalism and commitment to their constitutional duties as the formation begins operations from Wukari.
The commander further stressed that military operations could not be separated from cooperation with communities and other relevant stakeholders. He called for sustained collaboration with local residents and institutions as the Army works to preserve peace and address threats within the state.
As part of the activities marking the Brigade’s relocation, Akaliro paid a courtesy visit to the Aku-Uka of Wukari and Chairman of the Taraba State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, Dr Ishaku Adda Ali.
During the visit, the Brigade Commander thanked the traditional ruler and residents of Wukari for the reception and support extended to the formation since its arrival. He assured the monarch that the military would remain committed to protecting lives and property while working to strengthen peace and security throughout Taraba State.
The Aku-Uka, in response, pledged the continued support of the traditional institution and people of Wukari to the Brigade. He said residents would cooperate with the military to enable personnel to effectively carry out their constitutional responsibilities.
The Brigade also used a route march through Wukari and neighbouring areas to demonstrate its operational readiness and reassure residents of its presence and commitment to their safety.
The relocation places the Brigade closer to Wukari and adjoining communities as it continues its security responsibilities under Operation Whirl Stroke. The Army said its mandate remains unchanged, with the formation expected to build on existing gains while intensifying efforts against emerging threats within its area of responsibility.
