The Emir of Gumel, Alhaji Ahmed Muhammad Sani III, has died at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness, according to a palace source who confirmed his death on Thursday.
The monarch reportedly died while receiving medical treatment in Egypt. The palace source said details concerning his burial would be announced later by the traditional institution.
“He died while receiving treatment in Egypt, the palace would announce burial arrangements later,” the source said.
Sani’s death brings to an end the reign of the 16th Emir of Gumel, who was born on December 12, 1942, and had a background in public service before becoming a traditional ruler.
Before his emergence as Emir of Gumel, Ahmed Muhammad Sani III held a prominent position in the former Kano State Government. He served as Commissioner for Information, Internal Affairs and Culture between 1978 and 1980.
His period in government was marked by involvement in the development of the state’s media and information institutions.
Among the initiatives associated with his tenure was the establishment of Triumph Newspaper, which became part of the state’s media landscape. He was also involved in the establishment of CTV67, now known as ARTV.
Sani also supervised the expansion of Radio Kano during his time as commissioner, contributing to the development and wider reach of broadcasting in the former Kano State.
His transition from public service to the traditional institution eventually saw him become the 16th Emir of Gumel, taking on the responsibilities associated with the ancient emirate.
The palace confirmed that the emir had been receiving treatment in Egypt before his death, although no further details about his illness were disclosed in the information released.
The monarch was 84 at the time of his death.
With the palace yet to announce burial arrangements, further details concerning the funeral are expected to be communicated by the traditional institution.
Ahmed Muhammad Sani III’s life therefore combined public administration and traditional leadership, with his earlier career in government particularly associated with information, culture and the development of media institutions in the former Kano State.
His contribution to the establishment of Triumph Newspaper and CTV67, as well as the expansion of Radio Kano, formed part of his public service record before he ascended the throne as Emir of Gumel.
The palace’s confirmation of his death on Thursday formally announced the passing of the monarch following his prolonged illness and treatment in Egypt.
