SOKOTO – Fifteen construction workers narrowly escaped tragedy on Wednesday after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in the Unguwar Rogo area along Bauchi Road in Sokoto metropolis, triggering an emergency rescue operation and fresh concerns over building safety standards.
The incident occurred in the afternoon while construction activities were ongoing at the site, prompting fears that several workers may have been trapped beneath the rubble.
Emergency responders were immediately alerted and mobilised to the scene following a distress call received at approximately 2:23 p.m. Rescue teams arrived to begin a coordinated search-and-rescue operation amid concerns that casualties could be recorded.
However, after a thorough search of the debris, officials confirmed that all 15 workers present at the construction site escaped safely before the structure completely collapsed. No deaths or injuries were reported.
The Sokoto Operations Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said its Search and Rescue Team responded promptly and worked alongside other emergency agencies to secure the area and verify that no one remained trapped beneath the wreckage.
The rescue operation brought together personnel from multiple organisations, including the Federal Fire Service, Sokoto State Fire Service, Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigeria Police Force, and officials of the Sokoto State Urban Planning and Development Authority.
Members of the State Association of Civil Engineers and local residents also joined efforts at the scene to assist emergency responders and ensure the safety of surrounding buildings and residents.
Witnesses described moments of panic as the structure suddenly gave way, sending dust and debris into the air and causing people in the area to flee for safety.
Residents said the quick evacuation of workers before the complete collapse may have prevented what could have turned into a major disaster.
Confirming the development, spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufai, said preliminary reports indicated that no lives were lost and no injuries were sustained during the incident.
He noted that security personnel assisted in crowd control and helped emergency teams gain access to the site while assessments were being carried out.
The owner of the building project, Alhaji Auwal Abubakar, expressed relief that all workers survived the incident unharmed.
He described the collapse as unfortunate and thanked emergency responders and community members who quickly intervened after the structure came down.
Authorities have since cordoned off parts of the area as investigators begin efforts to determine the exact cause of the collapse.
