The Federal Fire Service has urged Nigerians to take greater responsibility for preventing fire outbreaks, warning that faulty electrical installations, unsafe cooking practices and unattended flames remain preventable causes of fires in communities.
Controller of the Federal Fire Service, Taraba State Command, Yakubu Samson Dungus, made the call on Monday during the launch of the 2026 National Fire Safety Week at the Taraba State Fire Service Headquarters in Jalingo.
“Fire prevention should not be left to emergency responders alone, but requires the active participation of government, businesses, institutions, families and individuals,” Dungus said.
Held under the theme, “Building a Fire Resilient Nigeria: One Community at a Time,” the event focused on shared responsibility in reducing fire incidents.
Dungus identified improper storage of combustible materials and unattended open flames among the hazards that communities could address. He also called for greater public awareness, early detection systems and responsible safety practices in homes, workplaces and public spaces.
Representing the Secretary to the Taraba State Government, Chief Gebon T Kataps, Acting Secretary for Home Affairs and Special Services, Mrs Christy Iliya, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting lives, property and the environment through public enlightenment, collaboration and preventive measures.
She commended the Federal Fire Service and the Taraba State Fire Service for their efforts to safeguard lives and property.
The General Officer Commanding, 10 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Nnebeife, represented by Major Oyom, Acting Commanding Officer of the 10 Division Transport Battalion, also praised the two fire services for their work.
Other speakers pledged support for fire safety initiatives and called for stronger institutional cooperation and greater public participation to build safer communities across Taraba State.
