World Trade Organisation Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has paid tribute to her mother, Professor Kamene Okonjo, following her death at the age of 96.
In a message posted on her official X account on Sunday, the former Nigerian finance minister thanked those who had sent condolences and messages of support to the family.
She described her mother’s life as fulfilling and expressed gratitude for the years they shared.
“My mother lived a quality life till the end and we are very grateful we had her for so long. May her soul rest in perfect peace,” Okonjo-Iweala wrote.
Kamene Okonjo was the matriarch of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family and mother of the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, Obi Ifechukwude Okonjo II. She was married to the late traditional ruler, Professor Chukwuka Okonjo, for 66 years.
Her death was announced on Sunday in a statement issued by the palace secretary of Ogwashi-Uku, Ifeakanachukwu Emordi, on behalf of the royal family.
The family remembered her as a distinguished sociologist whose academic work and advocacy for women’s rights and empowerment earned her recognition beyond Nigeria.
The statement also highlighted her humility, compassion and commitment to scholarship, describing her as a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who played a central role in the royal family.
“While we mourn her passing, we celebrate a life exceptionally well lived,” the family said.
It added that her legacy included scholarship, service, family values and efforts to advance the dignity and rights of women.
The family extended its condolences to the deceased’s children, including Okonjo-Iweala, Dr Njideka Okonjo-Udochi, Onyema Okonjo and Chichi Okonjo, alongside their families and the wider Okonjo royal household.
It also called on the people of Ogwashi-Uku to honour her life and contributions to society.
