Former Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) chairman Sam Amadi has accused President Bola Tinubu of seeking to avoid the demands of campaigning ahead of the 2027 presidential election, alleging that the president will depend on state governors to mobilise votes for his re-election.
Amadi made the allegation in a post on X on Wednesday, responding to Tinubu’s remarks that he might not visit every state during the campaign because of the responsibilities of his office.
Tinubu had said he would not be able to accompany campaign teams everywhere but would make time to speak directly to Nigerians.
“The responsibility of this office does not pause, and we have bills to pay,” the president said.
Amadi interpreted the remarks as an indication that Tinubu would leave much of the campaign work to governors, whom he accused of potentially using questionable methods to secure votes.
“Tinubu is very honest here. He will not campaign because he cannot face the stress of a campaign. He will allow the governors to cash out the votes through all means,” Amadi wrote.
He urged governors supporting Tinubu’s re-election bid to allow opposition parties to campaign freely and ensure that voters could make their own choices without interference.
Amadi also warned against further damage to Nigeria’s democratic institutions, citing concerns about the political and security situation in West Africa.
“Nigerian democracy is already damaged. But we should not damage it further for fear of the military,” he said, adding that the country needed democracy to survive.
The comments come as political attention turns towards the 2027 presidential election. Amadi’s remarks represent his assessment of Tinubu’s campaign plans and the potential role of state governors.
